Delay & Closing Status

Occasionally, we may be forced to delay or close schools because of inclement weather or emergencies (such as snow, icy roads, fog, power outages, etc.).

In the case of inclement weather, school officials start monitoring road conditions no later than 4 a.m. Every attempt is made to make a final decision by 6 a.m. so that working parents can make child care arrangements.

If school is delayed, there is always the chance that the delay could turn into a cancellation if inclement weather conditions continue or worsen.

Likewise, the decision to dismiss school early has to be made by 11 a.m., in order for drivers to be called in. In the past seven years, we have only made this decision twice due to the difficulty of notifying parents. Often the road conditions are better at dismissal time because crews have had time to clear and treat the roads.

Westfield Washington Schools announces all delays and closings over television stations as soon as a decision is made. You should also receive an automated message from our Global Connect Service via your home telephone. Individuals who miss the announcements can call the districts information line (867-8000) for details or to remove your number from this service.

As part of our online communication strategy, a "School Closed" or "School Delay" status will display on our district sites. We will post the status on our Facebook Fan Page and Twitter Feed as well.
